Smart Storage

Lockers that open with a phone, not a key.

Rent or buy app-controlled lockers anywhere in South Africa. Staff, learners and couriers open a door with a phone, a PIN or a card, and you watch every door from one dashboard.

Six questions. A real number back, usually the same working day.

Or call us. We answer our own phone.

  • 16 000 doors on this platform at one hospital
  • 40+ years of locker engineering behind it
  • Rent per door or buy outright
  • Keeps working through load shedding
  • Fits the lockers you already own

Keys are the expensive part of a locker.

The cabinet lasts thirty years. The key management is what costs you every single term.

Keys go missing

Every lost key is a replacement lock, a call-out fee and a cabinet standing open until someone gets to it. A school of 1 200 learners writes off hundreds a year and the admin lands on one person.

Half your lockers stand empty

A permanently assigned locker serves one person. Assign doors dynamically and three people can share one door across a day, so you buy fewer cabinets and use less wall.

Nobody knows who opened what

A key leaves no record. Every Smart Storage door logs who claimed it, when it opened and when it was let go, so a theft report starts with facts instead of guesswork.

Every one of those is an admin problem wearing a steel jacket. Smart Storage fixes the admin, and the steel comes with it.

Three steps, no counter, no deposit.

  1. Claim a door

Scan the QR code on the cabinet, tap Claim in the app, or present a staff or student card at the reader. The system picks a free door and assigns it.

  2. Open it

Phone, PIN or card. The lock releases and the door pops. No queue, no key deposit, nothing to hand back at the end of the day.

  3. Let it go

Release the door and it frees up for the next person. Or set it to release on its own at the end of a shift, a lesson, an event or a school term.

Rent the cabinets or own them.

Most South African sites we speak to want the storage without the capital request. Both routes run on the same platform, so you can start on rental and buy later.

Rent

From R000 per door per month

We deliver, install, connect and maintain the cabinets. You pay per door per month on a term that matches how you actually use them: a school year, a mining shutdown, a construction programme, a festival weekend.

  • No capital request and no maintenance budget
  • Repairs, parts and software updates included
  • Scale up a bank of doors in a week, hand them back when the need ends
  • Short-term hire for events, from a weekend upwards

Buy

Quoted per configuration

Buy the steel outright and pay a platform fee per connected door per month. The right call when the lockers are going into a building that will still be standing in twenty years.

  • Powder-coated steel, built for a thirty year life
  • Configurations from 2 to 30 doors per cabinet, any width
  • Doors in your own colours, branding on the end panels
  • Platform fee covers hosting, updates and support

Where these earn their keep.

The same platform, configured for how each kind of site actually runs.

A corridor bank of school lockers with pale doors and card readers

Schools and colleges

Bags, laptops and sports kit off the corridor floor. Assign a door per learner for the year, or share doors between grades by timetable. Admin staff open any door from the office without a master key.

An outdoor parcel locker unit with numbered compartments

Courier drop-points

A weatherproof box on a forecourt or at a centre entrance. The driver drops, the customer gets a PIN, the parcel waits. No failed delivery, no second trip, no gate access needed.

A double row of community hall lockers in a painted corridor

Churches and community halls

One hall, many groups, one week. Give each ministry, crèche or hired-out group its own doors for its own hours, without cutting another set of keys for another volunteer.

Lockers installed in an airport terminal concourse

Airports and transport

Left luggage that runs itself, and staff lockers on the airside that release at the end of a shift. Every open is logged, which is what the auditors come for.

Industrial change house lockers with ventilated doors and benches

Mines and industry

Change house lockers with ventilation and drying for wet overalls, boots and helmets. Shift-based assignment means one door serves three crews instead of standing shut for sixteen hours.

Sports changing room lockers in a modern facility

Gyms, clubs and pools

Members claim a door from their phone on the way in and release it on the way out. You stop buying padlocks and stop cutting them off at closing time.

Healthcare staff lockers along a hospital changing room wall

Hospitals and clinics

Scrubs, phones and handbags for staff who are never all on duty at once. Doors release automatically at the end of a shift so the next nurse walks up to a free one.

Office lockers with acoustic panels in an open-plan workspace

Offices and coworking

Nobody has a desk any more, so give them a door instead. Book it for the day from the app, and use the same bank to hand over laptops and access cards from IT.

Put a drop-point where people already stop.

South African delivery fails for boring reasons. Nobody is home, the complex will not let the driver in, the office closed at four. A Smart Storage box on a petrol forecourt, at a centre entrance or inside an estate gatehouse turns any of those into a collection that takes forty seconds.

The courier scans and drops. The customer gets a PIN by SMS or email and collects when it suits them, including at eleven at night, because there is nobody there to close. The box reports its own status, so your control room sees a full unit before the driver does.

For the courier

First-time delivery rate goes up, failed redeliveries go down, and a driver serves one address instead of thirty.

For the site owner

Forecourts and centres earn a share per parcel and get footfall that buys something on the way past.

For the customer

No waiting at home, no queue, no ID at a counter. A PIN and a door that opens.

What runs behind the door.

A cloud dashboard, a controller in the cabinet, and whichever way of opening suits your people.

One dashboard, every site

See which doors are in use, by whom and for how long, across every campus or branch. Open any door remotely. Export the log when someone asks for it.

Phone, PIN, card or QR

Not everyone has a smartphone and not every site wants them out. Use the app, a PIN pad, an RFID card you already issue, or a one-time QR code by email.

Keeps working when the power does not

The controller holds a local copy of who may open which door. If the fibre drops or the building goes dark, card access keeps running. On a UPS with your access control, users never notice.

Fits the lockers you already own

Mechanical locks come out, electronic locks go in, and old steel joins the same dashboard. Most sites keep their cabinets and replace only the locks and controller.

Talks to your existing systems

The same card that opens your turnstile opens a locker. User lists sync from your access control, HR system or school administration system instead of being typed twice.

Built with POPIA in mind

We hold a name, a contact and a locker log, nothing more. Data sits in your own tenancy, retention is configurable, and you can purge a user on request.

The platform is not new. Our South African chapter is.

Smart Storage runs on Qeeper, a smart locker platform built over forty years of European locker engineering and already carrying installations at this scale:

16 000

doors at Erasmus MC, Rotterdam

Europe’s largest teaching hospital runs shift-based lockers for 12 000 staff across 150 locations in one building.

5 000

doors at Axel Springer, Berlin

A campus with no assigned desks. Staff claim a door near wherever they are sitting, and IT hands over equipment through the same bank.

40+

years of locker engineering

Steel, locks, controllers and software designed as one system rather than bolted together by a reseller.

Those installations are in Europe. We are putting the first South African sites in now, and we would like yours to be one of the references we point at next year.

Straight answers

The six things every site manager asks us before they ask about price.

What does it actually cost?

Rental starts from R000 per door per month on a twelve month term, including installation, maintenance and the software. Purchase is quoted per configuration and carries a small platform fee per connected door. Volume, door size, locking type and whether the site already has network and power all move the number, so we quote off a short call rather than a price list.

What happens during load shedding?

The controller keeps a local copy of the access list and the locks are low voltage, so card access keeps working through an outage on a small UPS or battery. The dashboard catches up with everything that happened as soon as the connection returns. For outdoor courier units we quote a battery and, where it makes sense, a solar panel.

What if someone loses their phone?

They open with their PIN or their card instead. Every user has at least two ways in, and an administrator can open any door from the dashboard or the office terminal without leaving their desk.

Can you use the lockers we already have?

Usually yes. We replace the mechanical lock with an electronic one, add a controller to the bank and repaint or repair the doors where needed. It is cheaper than new steel and keeps a working cabinet out of a landfill. We will tell you honestly when a cabinet is past saving.

How long does installation take?

A single bank of doors at a site with power and network goes in inside a day. A school corridor of 400 doors is usually a week, scheduled over a holiday. Outdoor courier units need a slab and a power point, which is the part that sets the date.

Who can see the data?

You can. Each customer gets their own tenancy holding a user name, a contact detail and the locker event log. We do not sell it, we do not profile users, and we delete a user and their history on request. This is a POPIA obligation we take seriously rather than a paragraph in a footer.

Tell us what you need.

More detail than the form at the top, and it gets you a sharper number. No call centre, no drip campaign.
